Who's responsible for your data. This site is run by me, Ciaran Murray, as an individual. If you have a question about your data, email ciaran@ciaran-murray.com.
What I collect, and why
- If you subscribe: your email address (and your name, if you give it), so I can send you each new essay by email. The legal basis is your consent, which you give by subscribing. You can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email, or by emailing me.
- Email engagement: the newsletter system can record whether an email was opened and which links were clicked.
- Site analytics: visits are counted with Ghost's built-in analytics. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. For each page view it records the page, the site that sent you, your browser type, and a country worked out from your device's time zone. I see totals, not individuals.
- Where a subscriber came from: while you browse, your browser keeps a short list of the pages you've visited on this site (up to 15, in session storage, cleared when you close the tab and never kept beyond 24 hours). If you subscribe, it tells me which essay you signed up from.
- No advertising trackers. This site does not use the LinkedIn Insight Tag, the Meta Pixel or similar tracking cookies. If that ever changes, I'll ask for your consent first and update this page.
Who processes it for me
- Ghost(Pro) (Ghost Foundation) hosts the site and the subscriber list.
- Mailgun sends the newsletter on Ghost's behalf.
Both act on my instructions. I don't sell your data and don't share it with anyone else.
How long I keep it. For as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe and ask me to delete your details, I will.
Your rights. You can ask to see the data I hold about you, correct it, delete it, or take a copy. You can also complain to a data protection authority:
- in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie)
- in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk)
Cookies. Reading this site sets no cookies. If you sign in as a subscriber, Ghost sets cookies (members-ssr, and ghost-access and ghost-access-hmac) to keep you signed in and load your pages quickly. They're strictly necessary, so there's no banner.
